Copa América semifinals following Uruguay’s victory over Brazil

It’s time for the Copa América semifinals.

In an attempt to move to the July 14 Miami final, Uruguay, who defeated Brazil on Saturday in a penalty shootout following a scoreless tie, will play Colombia on Wednesday in Charlotte, North Carolina.

In front of an enthusiastic audience at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, La Celeste secured the final slot in the USA 2024 final four. The other semifinal, which takes place in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on Tuesday, features Argentina and Canada.

Panama was destroyed 5-0 earlier on Saturday by Los Cafeteros.

Play of the game

Uruguay wins because there wasn’t much to choose from during this defensive struggle. Two Brazilians missed their chances to score from 12 yards, and Manuel Ugarte scored the game-winning goal.

Turning point

Unfortunately, the five-time World Cup winners were unable to take advantage of their man advantage in the final fifteen or more minutes of play.

Key stat

It’s difficult to claim that either team deserves to prevail. Brazil can still lament its misfortune: Uruguay had one shot on target, whereas Dorival Júnior’s team had three times as many possession points.

What does Brazil face next?

The Seleção now has to focus on South America’s World Cup qualification competition, which the USA will co-host in 2026. Brazil has lost its last three games and is currently ranked sixth out of ten teams. On September 5th, they host Ecuador, and five days later, they go to Paraguay.

What does Uruguay’s future hold?

A fiercely contested match to eliminate the Colombian team. Even though Argentina is still the overwhelming favorite, both sides are serious contenders for the championship. The following weekend, if Uruguay and the Albiceleste prevail, they will each play for their record 15th Copa América title at Hard Rock Stadium.
