Ronaldo smashes the single-season scoring record in the Saudi League

Cristiano Ronaldo broke the record for the most goals scored in one campaign for Al Nassr, scoring a brace in a 4-2 win over Al Ittihad, bringing his league tally to 35 goals.

Ronaldo expressed his happiness on Instagram, stating that records follow him, not the other way around. He expressed surprise at breaking a league goal record and emphasized the importance of the team’s success, stating that they are in good shape and now need to win the Kings Cup.

Ronaldo, a former Al Nassr forward, broke the record for most goals scored in a single season, scoring 34 goals in 2018-19. He joined the club in January 2023 and scored his first goal in the first half after two offside penalties.

Ronaldo ended his season with four hat tricks and one red card and was suspended for an obscene gesture in February. He was substituted off the pitch to a standing ovation from the home crowd, but not before he celebrated after heading home a corner from Marcelo Brozovic.

Ronaldo’s individual accolades were disappointing for a talented team with global stars like Sadio Mane and Brozovic. Al Nassr did not take home a trophy from either the Asian Champions League or the Saudi Cup, despite finishing second in the league table. Al Hilal, without Neymar, was too powerful.

Al Hilal secured the title with a 2-1 win over Al Wehda, thanks to Aleksandar Mitrovic’s goal in the final seconds. Signed from Fulham, Mitrovic is second only behind Ronaldo with 27 league goals. Al Hilal also set a new world record with a 34-game winning streak in all competitions. Coach Jorge Jesus praised the team’s exceptional season.
