Cristiano Ronaldo’s record is broken by Pedri

Pedri broke a record set by Cristiano Ronaldo during Spain’s Euro 2024 match versus Georgia.

The record for the most major tournament appearances by any European player under the age of twenty-one has been surpassed by Spanish midfielder Pedri, who has surpassed Cristiano Ronaldo.

Pedri made his 13th appearance in a EURO or World Cup during Spain’s Round of 16 encounter against Georgia, at the age of 21 years and 218 days.

The Barcelona midfielder, who is 21 years of age or younger, has started four games in the EURO knockout stages, more than any other player in this age category.

By doing so, he surpassed Ronaldo’s record of 12 tournament appearances for Portugal before turning 22—an accomplishment he achieved in both the 2006 World Cup and EURO 2004.

At the age of eighteen, Pedro made his debut for his country in March 2021. Spain had a fantastic tournament at the postponed EURO 2020, making it to the semifinals before heartbreakingly losing to eventual winners Italy in a penalty shootout.

Having completed more passes in the opposition’s half (317) than any other player, he was named the competition’s UEFA Young Player of the Tournament.

He took part in all six of Spain’s EURO 2020 matches. He also attended the 2022 World Cup, where he finished 12th in the world among players with 426 open-play passes, even though La Roja lost in the Round of 16 after only four games.

However, English charmer Jude Bellingham might pose a challenge to Pedra’s new record.

Bellingham, who had previously made 11 games during the EURO/World Cup to surpass the totals established by Spain’s Cesc Fabregas, Belgium’s Enzo Scifo, and Germany’s Bastian Schweinsteiger before turning 22, tied Pedri with 12 appearances on Sunday when England met Slovakia in the Round of 16.

Bellingham might still break the record if England wins this year’s competition and Spain is eliminated early because he won’t be 22 until June of next year.
