However, Pep Guardiola’s team revealed on Friday that City will wear red in its road games in the upcoming campaign. It’s more of a burgundy color than a brilliant red, but in the video they shared on social media, the reddish tones are more noticeable.
On their website, the Sky Blues explained the color palette of their new uniform as follows: The traditional burgundy uniform with metallic gold accents symbolizes never-ending motion both on and off the field, perfectly capturing the essence of a team that never stops progressing. Fans were able to see the uniform yesterday in New York City.
On the other hand, the Red Devils’ navy blue jersey features a polo neck and an all-over geometric graphic. The Adidas emblem, the crest, and some other features on the shirt—like the three white stripes on the sleeves—are all white.
On social media, the two Manchester clubs’ color schemes sparked debate as supporters made light of the “change of colors” between the rival teams.
Rumor has it that these kit advertisements are promotional material for the upcoming Community Shield match between the two clubs, which takes place on August 10 in an attempt to win another championship.
Origins of the Manchester club colors
With the introduction of their first red jersey in 1902—a combination of white shorts and black socks—Manchester United, the most well-known team in the city, officially adopted red as their official color. The nickname “Red Devils” was given to them at this point.
