Live updates for Germany vs. Scotland: The hosts of Euro 2024 run wild against the 10-man Scots, winning 5-1

The 2024 European Championship began with a 5-1 victory for host Germany over 10-man Scotland.

Florian Wirtz’s long-range victory over Angus Gunn gave Germany a commanding early advantage. Germany’s lead was subsequently increased by the excellent Jamal Musiala, and Kai Havertz scored the penalty kick after Ryan Porteous of Scotland was sent off for a crude lunge on Ilkay Gundogan in the penalty area.

Late in the second half, substitute Niclas Fullkrug scored a fourth goal. Even though Antonio Rudiger’s own goal gave Scotland a late lead, Emre Can’s game-winning kick gave the home team a four-goal lead once again.

On Saturday, the tournament’s second matchup pits Hungary and Switzerland, the other two teams in Group A.

Who is scheduled for tomorrow?

There are three more games this Saturday.

  • Hungary vs Switzerland
  • Spain vs Croatia
  • Italy vs Albania

We hope to see you tomorrow! The Athletic will have dedicated live blogging for each of those games.

Have you seen the performance by Maximilian Mittelstadt?

Tonight Mittelstadt had to get off to a fast start. He got one, and from then on he played really well, taking another step forward in this improbable international career.

The choices Mittelstadt made in opposition to Scotland were excellent. In addition to his valuable breadth, Germany depends on him to time his underlaps and overlaps to open up space for the group of offensive midfielders in front of him. The night’s main attractions were Wirtz and Musiala, but Mittelstadt was also a part of their show.

Don’t retire, Toni Kroos—you’re really good

Death, taxes, and the greatest passing clinic ever put on by Toni Kroos.

There are certain inescapable things in life, and Germany’s number eight is determined to finish his football career with a bang, giving performances on par with any previous phase of his career.

As he does for Real Madrid, Kroos dribbled into the left half-space alongside his two center-backs from the opening minute onward, allowing Maximilian Mittelstadt to press forward and receive the ball higher from left-back.
