Florian Wirtz’s long-range victory over Angus Gunn gave Germany a commanding early advantage. Germany’s lead was subsequently increased by the excellent Jamal Musiala, and Kai Havertz scored the penalty kick after Ryan Porteous of Scotland was sent off for a crude lunge on Ilkay Gundogan in the penalty area.
Late in the second half, substitute Niclas Fullkrug scored a fourth goal. Even though Antonio Rudiger’s own goal gave Scotland a late lead, Emre Can’s game-winning kick gave the home team a four-goal lead once again.
On Saturday, the tournament’s second matchup pits Hungary and Switzerland, the other two teams in Group A.

The choices Mittelstadt made in opposition to Scotland were excellent. In addition to his valuable breadth, Germany depends on him to time his underlaps and overlaps to open up space for the group of offensive midfielders in front of him. The night’s main attractions were Wirtz and Musiala, but Mittelstadt was also a part of their show.
