Mason Greenwood scores twice as Marseille gets off to a winning start

In the opening match of the Ligue 1 season, Roberto De Zerbi’s revamped Marseille team defeated Brest 5-1 on Saturday thanks to two goals from Mason Greenwood, who made his Marseille debut.

After Luis Henrique had doubled Marseille’s lead, former Manchester United forward Greenwood scored again within three minutes, this time from the penalty spot thirty minutes later.

Mahdi Camara’s late goal made it 3-1 just before halftime, but Luis Henrique scored again, with Greenwood assisting on both of the Brazilian’s goals.

Greenwood was given a second penalty after being brought down by Jordan Amavi, but Elye Wahi, another new recruit for Marseille, converted it.

After a promising start to his career at Old Trafford, where he was suspended in January 2022 on accusations of attempted rape and sexual assault, the 22-year-old Greenwood moved to New York City last month.

In February 2023, the prosecution withdrew its allegations, and he proceeded to play his final season at Getafe in Spain. However, supporters of Marseille, notably Benoit Payan, the left-wing mayor of the city, have denounced Greenwood’s signing.

Rulli, who was left off of Argentina’s winning World Cup and Copa America teams this summer, made a memorable debut by blocking Romain Del Castillo’s early penalty kick after joining from Ajax the previous weekend.

After a turbulent season at the Velodrome, Marseille was led by former Brighton manager De Zerbi, who took over in June and promised radical changes following a season in which the team fired three coaches and missed out on European competition.

Although Brest’s third-place result from the previous season was unquestionably the best in club history, a number of important players have since left, and others were out due to injury or suspension. As a result, the Champions League newcomers’ start has been concerning.

Saint-Etienne, the runners-up from the previous season, will play Monaco later on Saturday as they make their top division comeback after a two-year break. Lille’s campaign begins away to Reims. Lille advanced to the Champions League play-offs in midweek.

In their first match since the departure of star player Kylian Mbappe to Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain won 4-1 at Le Havre on Friday to start their title defense.

After Gautier Lloris tied the score after Lee Kang-in gave PSG the early lead, Ousmane Dembele, Bradley Barcola, and a penalty kick from Randal Kolo Muani clinched the win for the defending French champions.
