Sixth Super Cup won by Real Madrid: Ancelotti, Carvajal, and Modric achieve new heights

Remarkable feats were accomplished by Carlo Ancelotti, Dani Carvajal, and Luka Modrić as Real Madrid defeated Atalanta 2-0 to win their sixth UEFA Super Cup.

In the UEFA Super Cup in Warsaw, Real Madrid, the UEFA Champions League winners, defeated Atalanta, the UEFA Europa League winners, 2-0 to start the next European season.

Los Blancos’ players and coach set several new marks in the championship game victory over Atalanta. FIFA.com examines those accomplishments.

Madrid Real

Six Super Cup triumphs is the record; coming into this game, Madrid was tied with Barcelona and Milan for the most Super Cup victories. But Los Blancos’ victory on Wednesday puts them comfortably atop the standings; the La Liga team has won the championship in 2002, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2022, and now 2024. Three times, in 1998, 2000, and 2018, they have been defeated.

Dani Carvajal and Luka Modrić

Carvajal and Modric are the most successful players in Super Cup history, having played in each of Madrid’s five titles since 2014, surpassing four-time winners Paolo Maldini, Dani Alves, Karim Benzema, and Toni Kroos.

Six is the player’s most appearance total. Additionally, since the game’s structure changed from a two-legged competition in 1997, Carvajal and Modrić hold the record for most appearances. Apart from their five victories, they were also involved in Madrid’s 2018 loss to their hometown rivals, Atlético de Madrid.

Carlo Ancelotti

Five victories most as a coach; Italian Ancelotti is currently the most successful coach in Super Cup history in addition to European Cup/Champions League history. In addition to his successes with Real Madrid in 2014 and 2022, the 65-year-old has two championships with Milan from 2003 and 2007. Josep Guardiola, who has won the cup with three different teams—Barcelona in 2009 and 2011, Bayern München in 2013, and Manchester City in 2023—is the only coach who has moved ahead of him.

Six victories combined as a player and coach; Ancelotti has won the Super Cup six times overall. A player, he also won it once. The former midfielder participated in both legs of Milan’s 3-1 aggregate victory over Sampdoria in 1990. Just three years after Ancelotti took over as manager, Guardiola also enjoyed success as a player. In 1992, Barcelona overcame Werder Bremen 3-2 on aggregate, with Guardiola starting the second leg but missing the first. Guardiola has so far emerged victorious five times.
