The Argentina vs. Morocco game saw a two-hour interruption. What was the cause?

The 2024 Olympic football tournament kicked off on Wednesday, July 24, with a thrilling encounter between Argentina and Morocco.

Morocco increased their lead, making it 2-0, in the 51st minute. But in the 68th minute, Argentina cut the deficit. Argentina took advantage of the extra 15 minutes of regular time granted by the referee, scoring in the 90+16th minute. The referee appeared to have already blown the final whistle, giving the impression that the Albiceleste had managed to salvage a tie.

Nevertheless, VAR examined the situation surrounding Argentina’s second goal an hour after the game concluded. The goal was later found to have been scored from an offside position. As a result, the goal was overturned, and three more minutes of play were mandated an hour after the game ended. Two hours later, the game was back on, with Morocco ahead 2-1. In football, this kind of situation had never happened before.

Morocco won their opening Olympic match 2-1 after hanging on to their tiny lead.

For the record, after Argentina’s second goal was disallowed, Moroccan fans caused a great deal of chaos.
