Transfer setback for Liverpool as Newcastle devises strategy to thwart the Reds’ interest in Anthony Gordon

In the upcoming weeks, Newcastle intends to begin contract negotiations with Anthony Gordon in an effort to thwart Liverpool’s pursuit of the winger.

Following his stellar season the previous year, Newcastle wants to give Gordon a new deal, which sparked interest from Liverpool in signing the 23-year-old. In 35 Premier League games, the former Everton player not only scored 11 goals but also provided 10 assists, but he also played for England in Euro 2024.

According to reports, Gordon was on the verge of a surprise move to Liverpool in July as Newcastle frantically tried to stave off penalties for PSR infractions. A deal estimated to be worth £60 million ($67 million) was discussed; however, the transfer fell through when Newcastle decided to sell Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh.

Gordon was a lifelong Liverpool supporter and has acknowledged in the past that his favorite player was one of the team’s illustrious former captains. To The Overlap, he declared, “Steven Gerrard was my childhood football hero.” He was a phenomenal player, and, coming from Liverpool, he was revered as a god there.”

When Gordon returns from his preseason break next week, Newcastle will hold discussions to extend his contract, according to The Athletic. At St James’ Park, there were concerns that Gordon’s head was being swayed by rumors that connected him to Liverpool. Newcastle is attempting to stifle more interest by extending an improved contract offer to the forward.
